The Gaslight Anthem emerged from the thriving punk scene of New Brunswick, New Jersey, with a distinctive sound that blended the influence of Hot Water Music, Against Me!, and the Clash with the gritty, emotional texture of Bruce Springsteen, Wilson Pickett and numerous Motown bands. Following the formation of the group in 2005, which consists of the vocalist/guitarist Brian Fallon, the bassist Alex Levine, the drummer Benny Horowitz, and the guitarist Alex Rosamilia, their soulful punk rock gained wider recognition with the release of their debut full-length album, Sink or Swim. The CD, which was released in May 2007 by the local label XOXO Records, was well-received by punk bloggers and zines alike. The Brian Fallon-led collective managed to both honor and develop the Jersey Shore sound. By the end of 2007, the Gaslight Anthem had performed at over 200 events thanks to their rising popularity, which also allowed them to share the stage with bands like Against Me! and the Draft.
On the latter, the group dialed back on the punk fervor of earlier releases and channeled the rootsy swagger of the Rolling Stones and Derek & the Dominos. In 2015, The Gaslight Anthem took a break. After launching a fruitful solo career, Fallon came back together in 2018 for a series of gigs to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the career-defining The ’59 Sound from 2008. In 2022, they came back together permanently and proceeded to work on their sixth album.
