ATREYU have released a new music video for their song “God/Devil,” a song from the group’s latest EP, The Hope of a Spark, which was released on April 14, 2023, on Spinefarm. The video was directed, filmed, and edited by ATREYU’s bassist, Marc “Porter” McKnight. Watch ATREYU’s new music video below.
According to Blabbermouth, the song, “God/Devil,” talks about losing one’s identity, sense of self, and faith. The lyrics depict a desperate cry for any higher power to help, when the real power lies within. The video mirrors this, with religious imagery and backgrounds throughout. The lyrics call out for any savior, angel or demon. The video’s imagery mirrors this situation, with images of churches and holy statues and monuments, some of which are turned upside down, and some depicting the cross turned upside down. The song’s serious lyrics and tone are somewhat contrasted by the band’s members in the video, with members of ATREYU performing lighthearted or comedic visual gags and dances as the heavy metal riffs play and in between the religious imagery.
ATREYU says that “‘God/Devil’ represents the intense feeling of hopelessness that leaves us as humans feeling so helpless and scared that we reach for anything that will help us alleviate the pain/sadness we are going through.” They elaborated, saying, “When life shows its saddest darkest side, we desperately reach for anything we can grasp to help us, and ‘God/Devil’ is the audible version of that.”
Atreyu will be performing alongside Point North, Within Destruction, and LYLVC at Ace of Spades in Sacramento on April 27, 2023.
