Skinny Puppy is a popular industrial music band, created in 1982 by the original members cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) and Nivek Ogre (ohGr) (Kevin Ogilvie) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Motivated by the world moving music of people like Kraftwerk, Voltaire and Portion Control, Skinny Puppy took their time to test their boundaries with different electronic recording techniques. The band put together multi-layered music usually utilizing keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion, splicing, samples and conventional rock music instruments.
While other contemporary remixes and edits of songs were created in mind to make a song more compatible for dancing or different radio formats, Skinny Puppy sought to remix and re-edit as an art form to reimagine compositions. More so, using remixes to propel their sound into styles of ambient, dub and techno. The band’s, usually, informal and spontaneous approach to music was indicated by use of brap, a term created by them and explained as an action meaning “getting together, hook up electronic instruments, get stoned, and record”.
