Green Velvet at LIV on Feb. 11th

Green Velvet, aka Cajmere, studied chemical engineering at the University of Illinois, where he discovered his interest in the energetic culture and lifestyle of house music. In 1991, halfway through graduate school, Cajmere decided to return to Chicago to pursue his newfound dream of producing house music.

In 1992, after living on a poor diet of cheese sandwiches and maxing out all credit limits, he finally made a place for himself in the dance community with his musical experiment, “Coffee Pot” (It’s Time for the Percolator) – Clubhouse Records. He then moved on to more intricate musical and lyrical arrangements with songs like Lidell Townsell’s “Get With U” (Mercury Records).

Cajmere and Dajae’s collaboration ended in at #2 on the Billboard Dance Chart and International dance hit – “Brighter Days”. It was at that point that Cajmere decided to start his own record label, Cajual Records. Having his own label gave him the freedom to achieve his goal of developing a sound that was representative of Chicago – it was this decision that put Chicago back on the map.

The Relief label also created the life of the experimental and unconventional, afro wig-wearing existence we know as Green Velvet – a Cajmere alter persona.

Melanie Stewart: Hi! My name is Melanie and I am a music business/management student at Berklee College of Music. As a young child, I began vocal training and continued up until my second year of college. My experience in music has lead me to many opportunities including performing at local clubs/cafes, joining a band, and writing my own music amongst other things. Outside of music, I have a passion for business and design. I have been able to create my own business as well as co-design a website for a peer project to be used for their company. I hope to perfect my skill and further my education.
