Atlanta rapper JID turned away from a football scholarship to pursue his music, laboring for years to develop a quickly shifting lyrical style that stood out against all the “sound cloud rappers” of today’s time. After the time spent collaborating with the Spillage Village collective, JID signed a deal with J Cole’s label (Dreamville) and produced a load of very musical and powerful intricate albums, reaching a new height of critical acclaim with skillful DiCaprio 2 (2018). He rejoined Spillage Village for the Spilligion (2020) project, then collaborated with popular band Imagine Dragons a year later. The Forever Story, JID’s third studio album, was released last year in 2022.
Neo-soul rapper Smino creates a melodic tornado of clever wordplay with funk, hip-hop, and soul influences and demolishes the music industry with these pieces of the storm into a sonic language to call his own. Introducing himself in the early 2010s with a string of mixtapes and EPs, he released his official debut, Blkswn, in 2017, and made his first appearance on the Billboard charts the following year with NOIR. As a richly collaborative artist, Smino shows up as a featured artist just as often as he attracts some featured artists for his own tracks, coupling up with Doechii, J. Cole, and more on his third studio album, Luv 4 Rent.
