Natalie Merchant at Au-Rene Theater on Apr. 27th

Born October 26, 1963, in Jamestown, New York, Natalie Merchant joined the band 10,000 Maniacs at the young age of 17 and became the band’s inspiration and artistic influence.

After achieving fame due to exposure from creating with the popular folk-rock band 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant became even more successful as a solo artist during the mid-’90s (a perfect time for singer-songwriter music). Merchant released her solo debut named Tigerlily (1995), a self-produced album that hit number 13 and achieved a Top Ten single with “Carnival.” Her socially conscious songs put her in the forefront of women in pop music, while Tigerlily helped pave the way for a number of female artists. Two other singles, “Wonder” and “Jealousy,” also reached the Top 40. Tigerlily sold over five million copies just in the U.S. Trailing behind in 1998 was Ophelia, another platinum-selling album that was given more exposure by Merchant’s promotion in her second Lilith Fair tour. Live in Concert came about a year later. As a distinguished social activist, Merchant also brought to light issues by campaigning in the name of important issues like animal rights, domestic violence, and homelessness.

She continued releasing albums into the 2000s, although Tigerlily continues to outsell the rest.

Melanie Stewart: Hi! My name is Melanie and I am a music business/management student at Berklee College of Music. As a young child, I began vocal training and continued up until my second year of college. My experience in music has lead me to many opportunities including performing at local clubs/cafes, joining a band, and writing my own music amongst other things. Outside of music, I have a passion for business and design. I have been able to create my own business as well as co-design a website for a peer project to be used for their company. I hope to perfect my skill and further my education.
