Bilal at City Winery Philadelphia on January 8th

The American singer-songwriter Bilal will be performing at City Winery Philadelphia on Sunday, January 8th.

The Philadelphia native grew up in Germantown. He began his interest in singing while attending church. His father would take him to the city’s jazz clubs which led to his passion for jazz. He attended New York’s New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and dropped out his sophomore year when he landed a record deal with Interscope.

He started appearing on major albums like Grenique’s Black Butterfly, Common’s Like Water for Chocolate, and Guru’s Jazzmatazz. The singer’s vocals helped him get involved with soul artists such as J Dilla, Ahmir Thompson, D’Angelo, Erykah, Badu, Mos Def, and Q-Tip.

Bilal’s debut album 1st Born Second reached the Top Ten of Billboard’s R&B albums chart. The production of his second album Love for Sale was assisted by J Dilla, Dr. Dre and Nottz. When the album was leaked online, Bilal was dropped from his record label which led to his increase of listeners. Bilal has since released three albums, Airtight’s Revenge, A Love Surreal and In Another Life with his song “Little One” receiving a Grammy nomination. Bilal has been featured on songs by Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Clipse, Sa-Ra, Jay-Z, and many more.
