Born as Patricia Holt in Philadelphia on May 24, 1944, Patti LaBelle grew up singing with her local Baptist choir in 1960 with friend by the name of Cindy Birdsong to start a group called the Ordettes. One year later, after the vocalists who joined, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, the group was renamed the Blue Belles. With producer Bobby Martin, they landed a Top 20 pop and R&B smash in 1962 with the piece “I Sold My Heart to the Junkman,” and afterwards, renditions of “Danny Boy” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
R&B legend Patti LaBelle has maintained one of the longest careers in contemporary music. Since the early ’60s with the Bluebelles (the girl group evolved into ’70s funk superstars LaBelle), she has created hits in a multitude of sounds including pop, soul, funk and disco. LaBelle began a solo career in 1977 in which she has achieved 13 Top Ten R&B singles, including the chart topper “If Only You Knew” (1983) and crossover favorites “New Attitude” (1985) and “On My Own” (1986). Burnin’ (1991) and Live! One Night Only (1998) are some other works that have won Grammy Awards in the R&B category. LaBelle has since released gospel and jazz , The Gospel According to Patti LaBelle (2006) and Bel Hommage (2017), while touring and scoring acting gigs.
