Damon Albarn, born in London England, is co-founder of the British group Gorillaz. Even before his time in the band, he was seen as an eclectic musician. As a child, he studied the violin and as well as the piano, and in secondary school he met Graham Coxon, beginning to compose and perform songs together.
Albarn later formed a rock group known as Blur. As lead vocalist and songwriter, Albarn and the band—which included members Alex James (bass), Dave Rowntree (drums) and Coxon (guitar),—released their album, Leisure (1991). Blur, known for singing about everyday life, achieved a major breakthrough in the industry with their album Parklife (1994), which won many awards from Brit Award (Song of the Year) to NME Award (Best Music Video) for their alternative/indie pop sound.
In the late 1990s, Albarn and comic-book artist Jamie Hewlett created a quirky idea for Gorillaz. This new “virtual band” animated by Hewlett, had characters that would serve as the focal point as far as the band’s image was concerned (on record covers/music videos, for example) of music imagained by Albarn. The group’s debut album in 2001, was an explosion of diverse pop styles from around the world, including genres like reggae, that displayed the Gorillaz group of band mates, artist and imaginary characters. The band consists of four fictional members:, Murdoc Niccals, 2-D, Russel Hobbs and Noodle. Their lives are portrayed in videos, interviews, short cartoons and comic strips.
