Hank Williams recently shared a flashback performance on his Facebook, from the Mel Tillis Theater in Branson, MO. The singer shared the video from his fresh faced days back in 1995. He was only about 22 at the time, full of energy and verve – but did not quite the reputation he has now.
A short introduction prefaces the performance, as Williams is introduced as a “little raw around the edges”, but “he’s gonna be a big star”. His grandfather, Hank Williams Sr., and his father, Hank Williams Jr., are mentioned before Hank Williams III is brought on stage, where he gives a clear rendition of “Your Cheatin’ Heart” full of youth and vigor. His voice is clearly suited to a country-sound – perhaps from generations of country singers preceding him. The audience begins to give him a standing ovation, to which Williams responds with a humble and happy, “Well thank y’all!”
Hank Williams III was probably not aware of the career he would go on to have – which spans decades and continues into the present day. He’s worked with artists such as DevilDriver and Tom Waits, gone on to work in the punk genre, and launched his own bands such as ASSJACK. He’s also paid tribute to his family often – taking the name Hank III or Hank 3 to embrace his familial legacy, while also owning some of his grandfather’s unreleased songs.
