Upon a discussion in a recent interview, the singer-songwriter John Legend opens up on his friendship with Kanye West. Legend has stated that he is against West’s political views upon Kanye’s open declaration in support of former American president, Donald Trump.
Legend states, “Kanye and I aren’t friends as much as we used to be. I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting Trump, I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly.” (NME)
Back in the early 2000’s the iconic pair had collaborated on numerous projects. More over, West was even one of the producers for Legend’s 2004 debut album ‘Get Lifted’. (NME) With much said, it is just another example of how much politics have been prone to divide people. These views are associated with an individual’s own virtues, ambitions and values. When these points of view does not align anymore, it is completely understandable to see the changes that has occurred between the two musicians.
However, despite drifting apart, Legend still expresses his admiration and appreciation for West’s journey: “He’s been very open with who he is and his struggles with mental health. And he’s very real, honestly. So I think there’s not a lot about him that people don’t get… Like he’s been pretty upfront with his opinions, his struggles, all the things that he’s dealing with.” (NME)
As bittersweet as this admiration and statement is to see the two icons growing apart, we must also continue to appreciate the separate journeys that the both are now heading towards. As human beings, people are constantly bonding, changing and separating. It is important to remember that despite their brilliant achievements, both Legend and West are humans as well.
