Today, Belgian trio Brutus have announced their upcoming album Unison Life, set to be released on October 21st via Sargent House. The follow-up to their breakout Nest, Unison Life is a concept of longing for a life of total peace. Total peace being the goal, the album confronts the obstacles that stand in the way of a Unison Life, which acts as a bridge between Nest and Unison Life, and the acts of bravery that help to surpass the trials. The album was written during the global pause on touring and is Brutus at their core.
“I wanted every song to feel like the last song we’ll ever write,” singer Stefanie Mannaerts explains. “It killed me inside because it’s almost an impossibly high standard, but that was my personal goal for this album. It was a two-year quest of trying to do better.” And the result is a strong, emotionally raw album that traverses the landscape of metal, punk, post-hardcore, and beyond. Math rock at its finest.
To accompany the announcement, the band has also released the first single and video “Liar” which was filmed in Morocco. The track is a powerful blend of the band’s influences, with a driving bassline, catchy guitar riff, and Mannaerts’ signature vocals. The video is the band’s first narrative-driven video that grips the viewer from beginning to end.
Brutus’ “Liar” is a melodic masterpiece. Mannaerts’ indescribable vocal range and lyrical prowess are on full display throughout, with the song’s chorus being particularly memorable. From her voice to its echoes, the emotion is palpable.
The instrumentation is also pretty remarkable, tight and well-produced. The guitars are catchy and the drums are driving. The whole song feels like it should be much longer than just a few minutes.
