Cat Power Performed at the Orpheum Theatre this Saturday, July 16 with supporting act Arsun. The indie rock artist is currently on tour for her recent cover album and made a stop in Los Angeles this past weekend for a show that was not quite what everyone expected.
Earlier this month, Power announced a special performance recreating the entirety of Bob Dylan’s 1966 set from London’s Royal Albert Hall, which Power will play in the same venue on Nov. 6 this year. This surprise performance will make Power the first artist to perform one of Dylan’s 1966 shows in its entirety, exclusively paying homage to one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Bob Dylan.
The indie icon’s live performances are known to be erratic and unpolished as she often blends songs with no clear transitions, her performance at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday, July 16 was no exception.
Throughout her performance, Power kept the stage lights to a bare minimum, audience members were unable to see Power’s face only her dark figure dancing around the stage. Throughout the entirety of her set, Power constantly waved her hands around urging the band to speed up the rhythm and constantly arguing with the crew about the volume control. The dim lights and rushed sets are often regarded as Power’s stage fright. However, her continuous dispute with staff on and off stage – as she walked off the stage several times in the middle of a few songs – was quite distracting and off-putting.
Power performed The Rolling Stones’ “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction,” Frank Ocean’s “Bad Religion,” Lana Del Rey’s “White Mustang,” The Pogues’ “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and more covers with her own twist, most of which are featured in her latest cover album. When Power was not arguing with the crew between songs, she conversed with the audience telling jokes and even mentioned a Netflix special recording at the show, though it is unclear whether that was a joke or not. Power also performed some of her songs such as “Say/ Great Expectations,” “The Moon,” “The Greatest” and so much more. The one and half hour show came to an end with “Wild is the Wind.”
