Earlier this week, while everyone was looking at the hottest fashions of the Met Gala, a draft of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision was leaked. The initial draft majority opinion was written by Justice Samuel Alito and social media and protestors quickly gathered to express their frustrations. Musicians also used their platform to speak out against the draft opinion, including Halsey, Rage Against the Machine and, most recently, Lorde.
Roe v. Wade was a 1973 landmark decision that ruled that the United States Constitution protects any pregnant woman’s right to have an abortion without the government’s excessive restriction. Since then, there has been controversy and divisiveness surrounding this decision. Olivia Rodrigo and Phoebe Bridgers have been some of the artists and celebrities that have spoken up in support of abortion rights. Lorde, who is currently on tour in North America, added her take on the issue while performing at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. According to Stereogum, while discussing the importance of using your body to understand your emotions, she mentioned, “Like so many of you, I’ve been sickened and heartbroken this week by the news that there are some people who think that our bodies are not our own. And I still don’t have the words to talk about this with you. It’s so big and so heavy. I think it’s OK to freeze for a little bit, and then you reengage.” The moment was captured on video and is available to watch below.

The overturning of Roe V Wade will mark a catastrophic shift in our fundamental rights to bodily autonomy and reproductive health care. We are constituents and we have the right and responsibility to fight this.@aclu@PPFA @AbortionFunds pic.twitter.com/zYlXSZqzCu

I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour. I went to planned parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access.
