It was a spectacular night on Wednesday, April 27 as fans enjoyed a killer and intimate performance from Jon Spencer and The Hitmakers. Jon Spencer and The Hitmakers not only performed their debut album Spencer Gets Lit but also captivated the audience with their charming persona, creating an unforgettable experience.
The night began with a striking performance from Oregon’s indie rock band, Quasi. The duo blew away the audience as they rushed on stage with such high intensity, quickly filling The Echo with the rock and roll spirit. The crowd cheered for the impressive stunt executed by lead vocalist and keyboardist Sam Coomes as he managed to play the keyboard with both hands and played what appeared to be a theremin resting above his keys with his foot! The crowd was astonished by Coomes’ agile performance, but drummer Janet Weiss stole the show with her kick-ass percussion skills. Weiss gave a quick shout-out to her first drum instructor who was standing in the front row supporting Quasi. The duo played fan favorites such as “All The Same,” “It’s Raining,” “See You on Mars,” and many more.
After a quick intermission, Quasi returned to the stage accompanied by singer and guitarist Jon Spencer and Bob Bert who literally plays trash as a musical instrument. With the full lineup of Jon Spencer and The Hitmakers now on stage the crowd quickly gathered around. The band opened with the highly energized track “Get It Right Now,” which had several fans wildly dancing in the crowd.
An unforgettable moment occurred as Jon Spencer addressed the crowd with some quick wisdom following the performance of “Bruise.” Spencer took the opportunity to ask fans in the front row to put away their cellphones and fully engage with the concert experience. Spencer approached a fan who continued to film his performance and advised her to put her phone away once again. After countless failed attempts to convince her, Spencer laughed it off and continued with his words of wisdom. To be fair, it seemed as though the fan was a bit too tipsy to understand what Spencer was saying. Nevertheless, the crowd applauded Spencer’s words and enjoyed the spectacular performance.
Jon Spencer has taken part in multiple musical acts such as Pussy Galaroe, Boss Hog, Heavy Trash, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, all of which are focused on some sort of rock subgenre. Recently, Spencer announced the end of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and debuted his latest band, Jon Spencer and The Hitmakers which includes Bob Bert, Quasi’s Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss.
This was only their second week on their tour following the release of their debut album Spencer Gets It Lit. Their next stop is tomorrow in San Diego, California before heading over to Tucson, Arizona. Jon Spencer and The Hitmakers are definitely a must watch act, for more tour dates visit Jon Spencer and The Hitmakers’ Twitter or Instagram.
