A slamming debut, full of power and sass
British pop-punk band Wet Leg released their self-titled debut album, Wet Leg in April of 2022. From top to bottom, this record is jam-packed full of catchy melodies and full-sized female power.
In 2019 a 10-year friendship between Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers found its way into forming Wet Leg. The duo then signed to Domino Recording Company, and the duo got hard to work. Releasing singles throughout 2021, their efforts began to hit the music charts from the UK to Japan to the US. Singles off this debut album found their way into an episode of Gossip Girl and landed Wet Leg nominations for the Libera Awards. The anticipation for this debut LP was more than justified.
With a ’90s-style bassline chugging along, “Chaise Lounge” is a fun, yet slightly random song. The lyrics seem to bounce around from topic to topic, however, each segment is so satisfying to sing along to. When the hook kicks in, it is a full-band affair. This relentless bassline is met with slamming percussion and melodic guitars.
“Angelica” paints a picture with both lyrics and instrumentation of a hazy teenage late-night party. It amplifies the desire to no longer stay at this outlined party now that it lost its fun and luster. This track is sweet and hoppy at times, yet when least expected it punches fast with a flawless punk transition.
Injected with personal breakup experience “Wet Dream” plays on the teenage love story that ends, yet, the other half pulls in the other after dreaming of them. After an interview with Apple Music, Wet Leg stated the song revolved around someone being a “softboi.” This is an individual, who plays with another’s heart and emotions to gain their attention. The song gives off total The Donnas vibes that are upbeat and catchy with a sarcastic tone full of attitude.
“Too Late Now” closes out the record on a subtle note. The track follows a mellow tone throughout. Even though the middle picks up with a crashing collection of bass, drums and guitar, there is a calmness in the chaos that really comes from the vocals. Amidst the thrashing instrumentation, the vocals remain the focal point of cool, calm and collected.
Wet Leg’s self-titled debut album is a powerful crash onto the musical scene, worth every listen.
