New Ronnie James Dio Documentary To Be Released This Year

A new documentary on the late, great heavy metal singer and songwriter Ronnie James Dio is set to be released this year. Dio, who passed away in May 2010, worked on his autobiography Rainbow in the Dark (named after his hit single) before his death, and it was released in 2021. As stated by Wendy Dio, his widow and longtime manager, “[The autobiography] finishes in 1986, with Ronnie playing Madison Square Garden. But the documentary goes all the way through his life [until] the end. And it was very emotional.”

Dio was a founder and member of the rock band Elf, as well as a member of the iconic heavy metal group Black Sabbath. As reported by Brooklyn Vegan, Wendy Dio explains that the first officially authorized documentary about the heavy metal star will tell the whole story and that the documentary is “really interesting and really good.” In an interview with Lucas Gordon, Wendy explained that fans and viewers can expect to see participation from fans of Dio. Also, Rob Halford (who was part of the Stand Up and Shout for Ronnie James Birthday live stream in July 2021), Lita Ford and Jack Black in the documentary will make appearances, while radio personality Eddie Trunk and rock biographer Mick Wall will be a part of the film as narrators.

As of yet, Wendy has not announced a set date for the release of the documentary; however, she confirms that it will be released in 2022. While the official date is still pending, Rainbow in the Dark is available to buy.

I'm very interested in how messages flow to audiences, small or big, and how technology influences communication over time, whether it is socially, politically, or through the workforce. Music is a big passion of mine, and I enjoy learning about new artists, new songs, and understanding how music influences society in many ways. As an intern at Mxdwn, I'm excited to be an influence to other people who have just as big of a passion for music as myself. I hope that my writings are captivating and full of great information, but I also well can't wait to learn more about the entertainment industry!
