Lingua Ignota’s Kristin Hayter Talks About Alleged Abuse By Daughter’s Alexis Marshall

Kristin Hayter of Lingua Ignota released SINNER GET READY in late August, and it’s only now coming out what the album was about. According to Stereogum, many of the tracks were about Daughter’s Alexis Marshall: “Alexis is an abuser … I wrote the record about it. I’m not in a place mentally where I’m able to fully take this on but his reputation isn’t exactly a secret in the music industry. Time will reveal … I am not well and am totally traumatized, and am doing a lot of work to heal.”

According to a recent interview, the artist said she was in an abusive relationship with Marshall from July 2019 to June 2021. In a statement with Needle Drop’s Anthony Fantano, she described the allegations: “I endured mental and emotional abuse and sexual abuse resulting in bodily harm.”

In a longer statement, she went into further detail about these allegations, describing the extreme toll it took on her mental health. She later explained that she learned of Marshall’s past relationships after they broke up, his allegedly “long history of predatory and abusive/exploitative behavior towards women.”

Following the album announcement last year, Lingua Ignota shared the single “Pennsylvania Furnace” and music video for “Perpetual Flame Of Centralia,” which represents the religious tones of the album. This album, as Drew Pitt writes, reveals the “complex emotions that she can show us through the pleading and begging are exceptionally compelling and distinct, even among the experimental genre.”
