Matt And Kim Pay Tribute to The Shins’ “New Slang” with Cover Featuring Footage from Up

Indie band Matt and Kim have released a cover version of The Shins’ “New Slang” via their Instagram account. “New Slang” was released on The Shins’ Oh, Inverted World album twenty years ago and the band is reissuing the album this year.

The Instagram post has a little video which is the scene from Pixar’s Up of the protagonist, Carl — and his relationship (from marriage to old age) with his wife. According to the post, Matt claims that although this scene is very heartwarming for himself, Kim finds it rather sad and distressing to view. Matt then says that ever since The Shins released “New Slang” he had been in love with the song. He could never resist the ‘ooo ooo ooos’ in the song either.

Listening to Matt And Kim’s version, it’s certainly different from The Shins’ original. A lot has been scraped from the original, no acoustic guitar, but they kept the haunting ‘ooo ooo ooos’. There’s also an echo effect on Matt’s vocals so the words linger.

Last month, Matt and Kim released cover version of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” in honor and celebration of International Women’s Day. In the beginning of the year, they also covered “The Blue Wrath” though had a slight copyright hiccup along the way.
