Los Angeles based psych rockers Triptides are dropping their seventh album this month on March 19, Alter Echoes via Alive Naturalsounds Records. They’ve been teasing fans by slowly dropping singles off the new album since last fall, including “Hole In Your Mind,” “It Won’t Hurt You” and more recently, the psych ballad “Moonlight Reflection” and jangly “Let It Go.”
Led by guitarist, keyboardist and singer Glenn Brigman, with drummer Brendan Peleo-Lazar and bassist/guitarist Stephen Burns Triptides formed in 2010 out of Bloomington, Indiana. The band eventually headed west and began incorporating a sunny tinge in their warped, psychedelic sounds. The band have been producing feel-good, ’60s and ’70s inspired rock hits ever since, releasing albums consistently. In 2018, the band teamed up with another Los Angeles favorite, Winter for the tropicália-inspired Estrela Mágica, which saw them teaming up for a US tour.
My introduction to the band was from their popular single “Wake,” off their 2015 album Azur, which now has over 1 million streams on Spotify. The fast-paced, upbeat song is filled with catchy riffs and dreamy vocals that give make the band instantly likable. Check out the hazy song here:
The upcoming album Alter Echoes is said to be the band’s strongest album yet. The album was recorded in Hollywood’s Boulevard Studios, a room that has recorded some legendary sessions from The Standells’ Dirty Water, Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Steely Dan’s Aja. Alter Echos soaked up this history and spirit of these legendary recordings, and cites influences from Pink Floyd, Love and Badfinger.

Brigman shared the inspiration behind “It Won’t Hurt You,” another single off the new album: “‘It Won’t Hurt You’ is our love letter to the golden era of Los Angeles psychedelic rock. We wanted to explore the sonic possibilities of the studio while embracing the 12 string-driven, power trio format that has been a staple of our live shows.” The song encapsulates that SoCal, Beach Boys vibe with a steady rhythm, carefree vocals and the use of a 12-string guitar.
