The Flaming Lips Plays First Bubble Show in Oklahoma City

The Flaming Lips performed space bubble show in The Criterion in Oklahoma City yesterday. The show which was set to take place back in December was postponed due to the rise in COVID cases.

The band announced their creative and COVID safe concert idea back in November when they had planned two shows for November 3 and December 11 last year. The band tested out their bubble idea back in October when they shot their video for their song “Assassins of Youth” , which the band performed the song live in the bubbles, the audience were also in the bubbles and the band’s frontman, Wayne Coyne could be seen walking over the other bubbles in the crowd as they performed.

Coyne explained his feelings about the bubble show and the idea of performing in bubbles in an interview stating “In the very beginning, it wasn’t really a joke, but we would like to mention how absurd it is that we may have to do a concert where everybody would have to be in a space bubble. I would be in this space bubble and everybody else would be too, the whole band and the audience. And I think as it’s gone on, that’s become not so much of a joke and it’s just down to how we would really do it.”

The venue had 100 inflatable balls present which could hold up to three people, keeping everyone in their separate bubbles. The show was full of bright lights, confetti and other exciting elements to entertain the crowd. The band also had balloons which spelled out “FUCK YEAH OKLAHOMA CITY” and “FUCK YOU COVID-19.”

The band opened the show with their song, “Race for the Prize”, followed by other fan favorites like “She Don’t Use Jelly”, “Feeling Yourself Disintergrate”, “Waitin’ for a Superman”, “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1”, “True Love Will Find You in the End” which was a cover of the Daniel Johnston song and many others.
