Los Angeles Artist Spotlight: Eyedress

Eyedress is the project of Philippines-born and California-bred musician Idris Vicuña. Vicuña started his music career at the early age of 13, playing in crust punk band The Liberal Underground and later with indie rock band Claud Winters. After spending some time in Phoenix and San Clemente, he relocated back to Manila with his family for some time, but continued to pursue musical projects. He formed the band Bee Eyes with some friends he met on MySpace and self-released a couple EPs and music videos. The band broke up and his solo project, Eyedress was born in 2012.

Under the Eyedress moniker, Vicuña creates mixes of dream-pop and post-punk sounds to create catchy songs. While in Manila, his debut album Hearing Colors was released by underground French indie-pop/shoegaze label “Beko” in collaboration with Berlin-based label “Mater Suspiria Vision/Phantasma Disques.” He was quickly picked up by Abeano records, an affiliate of XL Records and Hearing Colors was re-released along with a new EP, Supernatural. He followed up his debut with his second full length, Shapeshifter which was self released through his own label, Babe Slayer Records. Hip-hop producer Prefuse73 took an interest in his project and hooked him up with his current label, the London-based Lex Records. Manila Ice was his first release on the new label and garnered him acclaim from music publications.

His last release while based in Manila was a collection of bedroom-pop songs titled Sensitive G, which features Fazerdaze on track “Window Eyes.” Check out their dreamy collaboration here:

Eyedress relocated to Los Angeles and got to work on a new album. His latest release Let’s Skip to The Wedding was released on August 7, 2020 via Lex Records. According to Vicuña, this release “is for everyone who wants to be in a serious relationship … real simp[le] shit.” Let’s Skip to The Wedding is a collection of dreamy, dark songs that’ll make you want to fall in love and elope.

Since its’ release, the track “Jealous” has become their most streamed song to date, amassing over 14 million streams and counting. Stream the catchy post-punk track here:

Another stand out track from the album is the dreamy and wistful “Can I See You Tonight?” Take a listen here:

Eyedress has an international tour lined up for this fall, so here’s hoping for a hometown show in the distant future as well. I was able to catch their performance at Nothing Mag’s Halloween showcase and was instantly hooked on their dreamy sounds. For now, you can stream Let’s Skip to The Wedding via Bandcamp and purchase the CD, LP or “Jealous” limited edition picture disc 7″ record.
