Mogwai announced a new album called As the Love Continues, due February 19, 2021 on Temporary Residence Ltd. and Rock Action, exactly 25 years after the release of their debut single, “Tuner / Lower.” They also shared the lead single, “Dry Fantasy,” with a computer animated music video.
The album was produced by Dave Fridmann of Mercury Rev, who has also produced for most of the albums by The Flaming Lips and Mogwai’s albums, Come on Die Young (1999), Rock Action (2001) and their previous record, Every Country’s Son (2017). It was recorded at Vada Studios in England. Two tracks have features, Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross on “Midnight Flit” and saxophonist Colin Stetson on “Pat Stains.”
Mogwai frontman Stuart Braitwaithe stated in a press release that he hoped As the Love Continues would transport listeners to new places, with the aside, “unless you are somewhere really amazing and then why are you listening to some weird music like this?”
“Dry Fantasy” is a lush and atmospheric instrumental, with a chilly synth line taking the lead. Slow guitar chords, sparse bass, and a late-joining guitar part transform the otherwise-ambient song into a post-rock piece. Small electronic flourishes make the track sound more detailed.
A small computer-rendered world floats through the music video in shades of purple, blue and red. Brush strokes reveal spheres and flowers surrounding the landscape. The video was made by Vaj.power.
Upon release, the album will be available digitally, on CD and vinyl, as well as part of a colored vinyl special edition including live album demos on a second disc and a photo book.
