Atlanta rapper Big Boi tweeted on Oct. 16 that he will be performing socially distanced concert Oct. 25 at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. The concert is part of a series called “Big Night Out,” which will also feature concerts from artists including Moon Taxi, Marcus King Trio and Futurebirds. Big Boi will be performing with KP The Great, Kneel’n Rey and more.
Concert attendees will be seated in pods, sized either 8’ x 8’ or 8’ x 12’, that can hold either four or six people. Each pod is six feet away from the others on all sides and separated by barriers. Guests can bring soft camping chairs and blankets for the pods.
All attendees will be temperature checked upon arrival and access will be denied for anyone whose temperature is over 100.5 degrees. Facemasks are required at all times when out of the pods and strongly encouraged while in the pods unless actively drinking or eating.
There will also be cashless concessions, equipped with hand sanitizer dispensers, and common touch-points including restrooms and food/bar areas will be sanitized routinely. Additionally, there will be security guards throughout the park monitoring for health safety protocols.
Artists have been testing socially distant concerts for months. South Farms, a family-run farm in Connecticut, has been hosting socially distanced shows for the past couple of months and has had performances from musicians including Dinosaur Jr. and Lady Lamb.
Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit held four socially distant shows outside The Caverns in Pelham, Tenn., earlier this month. In August, Yo La Tengo held socially distanced concerts at the Mass MoCA.
In June, Big Boi, a seven-time Grammy Award-winning hip hop producer and former member of OutKast, teamed up with Sleepy Brown to release new song called “Can’t Sleep” off their upcoming collaborative album, The Big Sleepover. Last year, the two debuted “Intentions” featuring CeeLo Green, also from The Big Sleepover. Both Big Boi and Sleepy Brown are part of the Dungeon Family, a hip-hop collective that includes André 3000, CeeLo Green, Future, Killer Mike and more. Big Boi teamed up with Sleepy Brown on his track “Doin’ It” last year. The two also released new song on Oct. 16 called “We The Ones” with Killer Mike and Big Rube, an American spoken word artist.
Big Boi was supposed to host his own festival in April called the Kryptonite Festival at Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park in Atlanta, but it was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month, OutKast announced 20th anniversary reissue of their 2000 album Stankonia, which will come out Oct. 30 exclusively through the Vinyl Me Please subscription service as their October record of the month.
