Hip-hop duo Big Boi and Sleepy Brown have teamed up with Killer Mike, an Atlanta rapper, and Big Rube, an American spoken word artist, to release “We The Ones.” The new track, that was remixed by Organized Noize, delivers a clear thought. With the catchy beats comes a powerful message about the oppression that is currently occurring within the country.
Sleepy Brown’s verse states “Stand up to oppression/ Stand up to all aggression/ Stand up, it’s time to choose/ So your children will never lose/ Stand up, you know it’s right/ Stand up with all your might/ ‘Cause you know that.” He utilizes his time on the song to introduce the issue the song is going to address. With all of the controversial actions happening in the country right now, aggression and oppression are among the larger issues. He asks that people start to stand up for these issues to help make a difference for future generations.
Big Boi introduces his verse by getting straight to the point and does not hesitate to show what he stands for. As he begins his verse, he states how his proclamation is for the children and for those who are struggling. He continues on to say “The people up in arms ‘cause they killin’ us on purpose/ And now they pray for calm ‘cause America is nervous/ Ya heard me? Thank you for your service/ From a family of military vets/ My granddaddy and daddy, them were military, yes/ God, God bless the dead/ Protect the livin’ and give us the spirit they keep on killin’, ‘cause.”
Killer Mike’s verse was very personal as he discussed his cousin Robert and how he was convicted. He elaborated on how religion helped his cousin through his sentencing.
Run The Jewels, a hip hop duo also known as RTJ, is a supergroup consisted of a Brooklyn-based rapper EI-P and Killer Mike. The duo recently released their fourth album, RTJ4, this past June. Big Boi and Sleepy Brown recently released another new song off of their upcoming album The Big Sleepover. “Can’t Sleep” was released in June of this year. The Atlanta rapper announced just last year that his new music group would consist of him and Sleepy Brown under the name Big Sleepover. A release date for the new album has not yet been released.
Big Boi tweeted just this week that he will be hosting a socially distanced concert at the end of the month. The concert will be held on October 25 at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
