Finnish metal cellists Apocalyptica are heading on tour in 2021 with special guests Lacuna Coil. They’ll be in Los Angeles at the Mayan Theater on February 4, 2021. The tour was initially scheduled for this May 2020 following the release of their first entirely instrumental album in 17 years, Cell-0, but has been pushed back due to Covid-19.
Apocalyptica formed in 1993 in Helsinki and is composed of classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso, who all attended the Sibelius Academy, as well as singer Franky Perez and drummer Mikko Sirén. The group originally rose to fame as a Metallica tribute band sans-guitar, and have since adopted a neoclassical metal style.
Their ninth studio album Cell-o (pronounced “Cell Zero,” not “Cello”) was released in January 2020 and sees the band reverting to their instrumental roots, having previously recorded their last record with vocalist Franky Perez. The album is said to be an inspired sonic journey the band self-describes as “the core of everything… a particle that symbolizes the essence of all.
