Rapper Black Thought of The Roots has announced a new EP Streams of Thought, Vol, 3: Cane and Abel, which is set to be released on July 31. This upcoming album is set to feature a wide roster of guests including Pusha T, Killer Mike and Swizz Beatz, while Portugal. The Man and The Last Artful, Dodgr appear on three of the EP’s 12 songs.
This upcoming project is a sequel to the legendary rapper’s 2018 EP Streams of Thought, Vols. 1 & 2. This album will be produced entirely by one producer like its predecessor, with Sean C taking up the role this time around. Sean C has worked with the likes of Jay-Z, Jadakiss and Ghostface Killah in the past.
Three of the new songs, “Thought Vs. Everybody,” “Yellow,” and “Nature of The Beast,” were all recently featured on the artist’s NPR Tiny Desk appearance last month. The first song “Thought Vs. Everybody” will be the first single from the new EP (and can be heard below, right at the beginning of the Tiny Desk performance) while “Nature of the Beast” features Portugal. The Man (found at 13:45). “Yellow” (found at 7:50) is also of note, as it will be featured on the rapper’s upcoming off-Broadway musical Black No More.
The rapper was recently mentioned by rapper Freddie Gibbs during recent podcast, where he mentioned that the rapper, along with Kendrick Lamar, were the only two artists he wants to be as “sharp” as. “I look at him and I be like ‘yeah he’s sharp,’ you know what I mean? I wanna just be sharp like that. He’s one of the only n****s that I look at like that. Him and Black Thought. I damn near don’t like doing songs with Black Thought,” Gibbs explained.
Black Thought made a recent appearance of an updated performance of Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power” for the BET Awards last week. Black Thought and Public Enemy were joined by Nas, YG, Rapsody and Jahi during the performance, which was directed by Spike Lee and made in honor of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
