Saharan artist Mdou Moctar will bring his psychedelic, West African music to Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom on October 13. One of the most innovative artists in Saharan Music, Mdou Moctar plays the Tuareg guitar in unconventional ways that make him stand out. He’s also dabbled in film, creating the first Tuareg language film of Prince’s Purple Rain.
World Music has been surging in popularity with bands like Turkish Psych group Altin Gün and Japanese psych bands like Kikagaku Moyo and more selling out local shows and taking their well-deserved place among great acts at major music festivals all over the world. Mdou Moctar is definitely among those well-deserved acts.
Ilana (The Creator) is Moctar’s first true studio album with a live band. The album was recorded in Detroit at the tail end of a US tour by engineer Chris Koltay (War on Drugs, Deerhunter) and was released in 2019. It’s full of jammy, psych rock sounds and wailing guitars, and with a name like Ilana, what’s not to love?
Moctar will be joined by Portland minimalist punk band Lithics and Particle Kid, aka Micah Nelson, son of Willie Nelson. Get your ticket to their show and transport yourself to the Saharan desert this October!
