Every so often a strange combination of artists will come along to rock your world. This really isn’t too rare an occurence in the world of live music, but sometimes a lineup appears that leaves you scratching your head. The latest entry in the canon of crazy shows that don’t make any sense on the surface is Deftones, Gojira and Poppy who will take the stage at the Greek Theatre on 8/2.
In January, with Poppy’s release of her latest record I Disagree this lineup finally started to make more sense. After toying with the idea of extreme music for about two years, I Disagree finally capitalized on Poppy’s promise of a more extreme sound. Featuring a host of metalcore and industrial metal inspired sounds, she’s established herself as an unexpected innovator in a scene that is finally beginning to get some much deserved recognition.
Gojira and Deftones make a little more sense. Gojira may lean a little farther in the extreme side of extreme metal, but their influence and reach is so undeniable that it’s no surprise they’re playing with someone like Deftones. Deftones too leans in a more experimental direction, though they are particularly influenced by post hardcore and ‘90s era alternative rock and metal. Their hyper accessible sound managed to gain the genre new fans, while still pushing their particular brand of cacophony in an exciting new direction.
Provided everything goes to plan, this is going to be one of the coolest and wildest performances of the year, so don’t miss out on tickets to the Greek to catch this amazing event for yourself.
