The Drive By Truckers Bring Country back to LA

Country music is certainly having a moment right about now. Between outlaw rockers like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers, along with a new breed of pop/country in Kacey Musgraves, the critical world may be swinging back around to loving country. In my eyes, it’s well worth the wait, but we need to go back and pay homage to the band that kicked it off, The Drive By Truckers.

The band, which began back in the late ‘90s, quickly found an audience by tapping into a sound reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Johnny Cash. They firmly rooted themselves in the Southern Consciousness by recreating the sounds that country initially used to rise to prominence, and represented a reprieve from the pop-country of Big & Rich, Kenny Chesney, and Keith Urban that was rapidly taking over radio stations across the nation.

Ultimately Drive-By Truckers would lose this battle, but with the latest developments it seems that they may have won the war. These days many have forgotten, or at least dismissed the aforementioned groups but there is a massive groundswell of critics and music lovers who regularly recognize the importance that Drive-By Truckers has had on the face of modern country music.

This March, Drive-By Truckers repays the love of their fans with a tour in promotion of their upcoming record The Unraveling. They’ll be stopping by the Regent Theater in Los Angeles and tickets are sure to move quickly so stop on by and see one of the greatest country acts up close and personal.
