Freddie Gibbs and Madlib Take Over the Novo with BADBADNOTGOOD on 4/15

Hip-hop is in a bit of an odd moment. While it rules the charts, much of what is being put out has yet to be fully embraced by critics. But at the same time, that music opens up pathways for other hip-hop to make waves in ways that it may not have in previous decades. One particular duo that kicked off in 2014 and has remained a fixture in the minds of hip-hop fans is Freddie Gibbs and Madlib.

This duo kicked off their collaboration with the modern hip-hop classic Pinata. Replete with jazzy, sample heavy beats and airtight rapping, the record quickly found an audience with both casual and hardcore hip-hop fans. It’s difficult to think of anyone who didn’t like Pinata when it came out, and the same is true for its follow up Bandana. While there has been some argument as to which record is superior, few have claimed that Bandana is not a worthy successor. The record is even more impressive when performed live, which often sees Gibbs freestyle or go a cappella as Madlib constantly switches samples.

Performing with Freddie Gibbs and Madlib is Badbadnotgood. This jazzy group impressed in 2016 with their record IV which featured jazz grooves and excellent vocals. They also turned heads with Sour Soul in 2015, an instrumental vehicle for the incomparable Ghostface Killah.

Catch these excellent performers at the Novo on 4/15 as part of the Coachella sideshow. Assuming the show goes off without a hitch, tickets are likely to move quickly for this medium sized theater, so grab them quick.
