Jhene Aiko, the incredibly talented 31 year old R&B songstress, began her career in the early 2000’s. She contributed vocals to multiple B2K songs as well as music videos from various artists. She was beginning to make a name for herself and people were attracted to her look, pure vocal ability, and musical talent. Aiko was set to release her debut album in 2003, but instead left the industry to finish her education as she was only 15 at the time.
She returned to music in 2007, lucky for us. She began by releasing a mixtape in 2011 titled Sailing Soul(s), which featured collabs with Miguel, Drake, Kanye West, and others. She was breaking onto the scene in a major way and was signed to Def Jam records shortly after. Since then, she has made incredible strides as an artist. Her debut EP, Sail Out (2013), reached number 8 on the Billboard 200. She had released 3 studio albums. The first two, Souled Out (2014) and Trip (2017), are highly acclaimed works of art and reached number 3 and 5 respectively on the Billboard 200.
She just released her newest album this year, Chilombo, which showcases her full abilities even more than past albums. It features freestyles, amazing featured artists, booming as well as soft vocals from Jhene, and of course incredible creativity that she always displays. She is coming to Franklin Music Hall June 20 so check your calendars because this is one you don’t want to miss
