Steve Miller heads the group on guitar and lead vocals, and formed this classic rock band back in 1966 in San Francisco under the original name, Steve Miller Blues Band. They signed with Capitol Records in 1967 and shortened their name to just the Steve Miller Band. Many members have come in and out, with a total of 24 past members. The current lineup is as follows: Steve Miller (lead vocals, guitar from 1966–present), Kenny Lee Lewis (guitar, bass from 1982-1987, 1993–present), Gordy Knudtson (drums from 1987–present), Joseph Wooten (keyboards, backing vocals from 1993–present), and Jacob Peterson (guitar from 2011–present).
The Steve Miller Band has an extensive discography of 18 studio albums, released from 1968 to 2011. They hit their stride with the release The Joker (1973), their eighth studio album. The LP peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Canadian chart, and became platinum certified shortly after. Their next 4 albums, including Fly Like an Eagle (1976), are critically acclaimed and largely responsible for the band’s growing popularity and presence in the rock and music scene in general. Fly Like an Eagle is 4x platinum in the US, 2x multi-platinum in Canada, and gold in the UK. The other three albums, Book of Dreams (1977), Circle of Love (1981), and Abracadabra (1982), have done extremely well on the charts as well. They are, respectively, 3x multi-platinum, gold, and platinum certified in the US.
