Judas Priest has been on the scene for an eternity, with the group having formed in West Midlands, UK in 1969. They are often listed as one of the greatest metal bands of all time, and they have sold over 50 million albums. Despite the longevity of their careers, this group did not find commercial success for many years, and they started to garner major attention until 1980 after the release of their sixth album, British Steel. The Guardian has referred to this album as the record that defines heavy metal. They adopted a more simplistic style with less innovation in terms of their sound, and immediately began to see results from audiences around the world and they were beginning to make a name for themselves. Incredibly, Judas Priest have released 18 studio albums, and 12 highly acclaimed awards along with 25 total nominations.
Many members have come in and out of the group, but the current lineup is as follows: Rob Halford (vocals), Glenn Tipton (guitar), Richie Faulkner (guitar), Ian Hill (bass), and Scott Travis (drums). Tipton and Hill are the only current members who have appeared on every album. Judas Priest’s unique style and image, consisting of black leather, spikes, and tattoos, had a huge influence during the glam metal era in the 1980’s. This along with their raw musical talent, especially when paired with the unique playing and singing styles of Halford, Downing, and Tipton, clearly shows why they have had such a massive and long-lasting influence. Don’t miss out on this chance to see Judas Priest on their 50th anniversary tour — I hope to see you there on the 14th for a great night!
