Liturgy’s music has been described as transcendental black metal, experimenting with many other genres including prog rock, electronic music and even hip hop. The band’s lineup consists of Hunter Hunt-Hendrix (vocals, guitar), Bernard Gann (guitar), Tia Vincent-Clark (bass), and Leo Didkovsky (drums). Liturgy initially began as a solo passion project for Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, but it expanded to a 4-part collective. They released their debut album the following year in 2009, titled Renihilation. Their second album, Aesthetica (2011), performed better with audiences and was ranked #26 on Spin 50’s Best Albums of 2011.
The group, and especially Hunt-Hendrix, have expressed a desire to move away from conventional black metal sounds, with the next albums featuring sounds previously foreign to the metal and black metal genres. Some of these sounds included bells and electronics, as well as the presence and sounds of an eleven-piece chamber ensemble alongside Liturgy for one of their performances in 2018. Their 2015 album was so experimental and non-traditional that it was named the #1 avant-garde album of 2015 by both Spin and Rolling Stone. Come check out this unique, experimental, and revolutionary band when they come to the lively, intimate, and extremely underrated venue that is MilkBoy Philadelphia.
