Let’s dig into just how weird Coachella is. No I don’t mean because it’s one of the more expensive music festivals out there and people still buy tickets to just see the headliners and take photos in front of weird art. I don’t even mean the actual weird people that you only see at Coachella because music festival might just be among the most lawless places on the planet. No, I mean that one of the biggest and most culturally significant music festivals in the world takes place in the actual middle of nowhere.
Part of this is because logistically it makes sense. There’s a lot of land there and if you want to throw a big music festival you need a lot of space. It also doesn’t hurt that the space itself is cheap, it’s part of why there aren’t that many really really big festivals in Los Angeles, because the land rental fees are just way too high.
The other part is because the middle of nowhere allows you to be weird. It’s the very same thing that has made Pappy & Harriet’s such a destination. And when Coachella rolls around, Pappy & Harriet’s becomes one of the most popular spots for the undercard artists to play a show.
This year is no different, the slate for Pappy & Harriet’s includes acts like Idles and Sleaford Mods. The first artist kicking this off will be the incomparable Hot Chip who will perform a DJ set on 4/9 so make sure to swing by if you’re going to be a little early to the festival.
