At the risk of hurting my reputation with the recording academy, the Grammys are easily the worst awards show in existence. They almost always pick the wrong winners and category fraud runs rampant. I’m confident that there isn’t a single person in the entire world who understands how the Best New Artist category works. All that is to say that somewhere across the Atlantic there is a music awards body who actually does their job and awards quality artists. The Mercury Awards is everything the Grammy’s wish they could be, and one of their three time nominees, Laura Marling, will be swinging by the beloved Troubadour on 4/29.
Marling rose to acclaim creating what has occasionally been labeled as Nu Folk. A specific subset of the folk genre that focuses on blending acoustic and traditional instruments with modern pop sensibilities. Similar artists include groups like The Rakes and Mumford and Sons.
Lately Marling has been toying with new sounds and personas. Most recently she was involved with the project LUMP who released an album in June of 2018. This most recent tour will see her returning to her roots as she performs under her own name. Be sure to grab some tickets to catch Marling at this incredible venue.
