Mr. Bungle Brings, Ho99o9, Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo to a Killer Show at the Fonda

This is gonna be easier if we get this out of the way first, clowns are creepy right? Like no one here thinks that they’re cool and funny? Awesome, great, we’re all on the same page now. That being said, Mr. Bungle isn’t quite like other clowns, unlike the creepy ones that stand outside my apartment waving to me, despite me living on the second floor, while holding what appears to be a dead squirrel. Mr.Bungle makes good music, and doesn’t knock on my bedroom door only to go back to hiding under my couch… menacingly.

Mr. Bungle, which is one of the rare bands to have remained fairly intact since many of its members were in high school, exists outside of the constructs of genre. They began as a death metal band but quickly found their way into speed metal and even ska in their early days. Recent ventures from them have seen explorations in experimental, jazz, and hardcore music which has wonderfully built out their sound palate, and showcasing a willingness and desire to evolve despite being in a position to remain stagnant. This specific show features Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo who respectively are from Anthrax and Slayer, and are expected to bring a ferocity to this unique show.

Mr. Bungle’s choice of a tour partner is as inspired as their music. Ho99o9 (pronounced “Horror”) is one of the most boundary pushing punk bands currently making music. They have more in common with a group like Death Grips than they do The Misfits, and frequently engage in off the wall performances with equally bombastic sounds. This insane style perfectly matches that of Mr. Bungle, providing an exciting complement to the strange performance.

The Fonda, a wonderful venue in Hollywood. Is the perfect location for such a strange show. The venues Hieronymous Bosch paintings provide a wonderfully odd atmosphere while the checked floor calls to mind ska and punk acts from ages past. Add to that the excellent sound and you’ve got a winning combo for anyone who buys a ticket.
