A posthumous Mac Miller album will be released on January 17th called Circles, according to recent press statement made by the late rapper’s family. This statement was posted on the performer’s Instagram page, and revealed that Jon Brion, the producer who had worked with Miller on his final album Swimming, had completed work on this project following Miller’s death in 2018.
This album will be a companion piece to Swimming, which featured a neo-soul inspired sound that blended Miller’s introspective lyricism, with production and styles from artists such as Dev Hynes, Dâm-Funk, DJ Dahi, Tae Beast and Flying Lotus. Swimming was as posthumously nominated for the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, and debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 before his death.
“Two different styles complementing each other, completing a circle — Swimming in Circles was the concept.” the statement explained. “He had been working with Jon Brion, who after hearing some early versions of songs, cleared his calendar to help Malcolm fine-tune them. After his passing, Jon dedicated himself to finishing Circles based on his time and conversations with Malcolm. We are eternally grateful to Jon and to those who gave their best to the difficult and emotional task of putting out this body of work.”
Miller passed away in September of 2018 from an overdose caused by a toxic mix of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. It is believed that Miller was given fake Percocet pills laced with the deadly opiate fetanyl. Two people have been charged with providing the late rapper with the fentanyl laced pills.
