Tune-Yards Bring Their Exquisite Sound to the Walt Disney Concert Hall

A concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall is a sight to behold. In a very literal sense, Frank Gehry designed building paints an iconic silhouette on museum row, its sweeping curves and reflective metal exterior providing the backdrop for many a photoshoot and instagram post. Beyond that it is the true home of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra when they are not playing at the Hollywood Bowl. As such it is rare for a rock band, or really any non-orchestral band to play this legendary stage, but then again, Tune-Yards has always been a rare band.

After hitting the scene with their breakout record Whokill in 2011, Tune-Yards has quickly become one of the most exciting bands working in indie music. Their unique approach to instrumentation and exciting use of vocal layering made them unlike any other group currently in music, and despite their proclivity toward strange melodies and sounds, they never teetered too far away from creating delightful pop jams.

Luckily these exciting sounds aren’t just something on the album. When seen live Tune-Yards accomplishes this vocal layering often without a backing track, instead opting to loop the vocal melodies atop one another with a playback machine, adding an exciting performative element to their shows. They will doubtlessly employ this technique in the concert hall to achieve a stunning effect, and given the lovely acoustics of this venue which was custom built for music there’s plenty reason to believe that this will be the best sounding concert of the year.
