The idea of an album signing is nothing new. It’s ultimately nothing more than a book signing but, you know, with a musician. But certain artists have a mystique about them that makes the idea of meeting them so much more alluring. As if the very act of engaging with them on a face to face level might allow some of their energy or fantastic nature to rub off on you if only for a moment.
Poppy is one of those captivating artists. In part because she came up in the internet age and learned how to properly brand develop, but mostly because she’s a genuinely interesting person who utilizes music to explore new and exciting ideas.
This year Poppy will be releasing her third full length album I Disagree, which sees her continuing down the path of more extreme genres like hardcore and metal instead of her typical pop fare. While it would be easy to dismiss it as a gimmick (cute, unassuming person does metal has a wikipedia entry’s worth of examples) her actual execution is rather impressive barring one or two false starts, and has us over at Mxdwn very excited for the release of her new record.
Amoeba, unlike Poppy is sadly going the way of the dinosaurs. Not because it is a record store but because the people who have leased the building to Amoeba are finally selling the property so that it can be turned into condos. You know, because when all the condos are built people will realize they’ve demolished all the exciting stuff to build places in what used to be exciting areas. Criticism of real estate development aside, Amoeba consistently puts on great shows and you can look at records while they’re happening. So stop on by, see Poppy, get your record signed and then buy a bunch of other records.
