Lauryn Hill is a singer, songwriter, and rapper from New Jersey. She has been a member of the group Fugees, a derivative of “refugee”. The group quickly gained popularity for their unique style which blended reggae, rock, and soul. Their debut album in 1994, titled Blunted on Reality, reached number 62 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Their second album was released in 1996, titled The Score, and peaked at #1 on the US Billboard 200 with more than 17 million copies sold worldwide. Hill was beginning to come into her own and attracting attention as a solo artist with songs that showed off her incredible talent and vocals from the album, such as Fu-Gee-La, and Ready or Not.
At this point, Hill is 21 years old, still living at home, and enrolled at Columbia University. She recorded her first solo album in 1998, titled The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The album features incredible artists such as Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige, and John Legend (who was essentially unknown back then). The album received rave reviews and was the most acclaimed album of 1998. It sold over 420,000 copies in the first week. The album topped the Billboard 200 for 4 weeks and the Billboard R&B Albums chart for 6 weeks. In the run-up to the 1999 Grammy Awards, she became the first woman to be nominated in 10 categories in a single year. She is truly a legend in the industry, and is one of the most influential artists not only in R&B, but in the world of music in general. This is a great opportunity to see her live, and she will be coming to the Tower Theater in Upper Darby Township, about 30 minutes outside of Philly. Get your tickets now!
