British Lion released a new track titled, “The Burning” which has an 80s hair-metal feel with powerful guitar and drums throughout the track. The song intro begins with vocals set against instrumentals and an escalating sound throughout with lyrics like, “Where would I be without you, I couldn’t live without you. You are the reason that I breathe.” The band has a slew of UK tour dates in December before they head to the United States in January and February in 2020. British Lion is the creation of Iron Maiden bassist and founder Steve Harris and is the ‘up close and personal’ side projects. He is joined by vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarists David Hawkins and Grahame Leslie and drummer Simon Dawson.
British Lion will release their second album The Burning on January 17, 2020 in digi-pack CD, double gatefold vinyl and digital download formats. The album was recorded, engineered and mixed at Barnyard Studios by Tony Newton and produced by Steve Harris. The album is follow-up to British Lion’s 2012’s debut album and Harris’ first ever musical venture outside of Iron Maiden which was pronounced both “brilliant” and “a big hearted ferocious triumph” by the music press.
When describing the release of his first album with British Lion, Harris said, “I’ve always been proud to be British. I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be. It’s a massive part of being me. It’s not like I’m flag-waving or trying to preach, this is not a political statement at all. It’s like supporting your football team, where you come from. I just think it lends itself to some really strong imagery too, and to me it fits in with the sound.
Harris also added of the music from British Lion and their first album as “more mainstream rock than metal, very British sounding, very 70s-influenced and quite commercial… but good commercial. There’s all kinds of stuff going on, with nods to the Who and UFO and some classic British rock bands, but it’s not the progressive rock album some might be expecting.” During his appearance on That Metal Show in September 2012, Harris revealed that he tried a number of bass-playing techniques which he would not do with Iron Maiden, such as letting his strings “go dead”.
