The very best artists excel in more than one area. Andy Warhol and his love of film, Takeshi Murakami and… well whatever exactly it is that he’s doing, David Bowie and acting, Kanye West and, about 45 other things. It’s not uncommon to find an artist with an interest in multiple artistic pursuits – but it is rare to find an artist who is confident enough in their pursuit that their singular vision shines through everything they touch.
Solange Knowles, who is perhaps best known as the sister of Beyonce Knowles-Carter, and for an incident involving an elevator, deserves to be considered among the greatest artists currently working. While she had been famous for sometime, she finally began to get the recognition she deserved with her immaculate 2017 album A Seat At the Table. That album, and the tour that accompanied it showed Solange as a creator who was not content to sit in the shadow of her sister’s fame – and someone who deserved to be taken as seriously as the Frank Oceans and Kendrick Lamars of the world.
A portion of what made A Seat at the Table so special was her eye-popping stage design. Each stage featured elements of sacred geometry, smooth white surfaces, and stunning choreography. As a recognition of her curatorial prowess, the Getty Center Museum has announced a film and performance series titled Bridge-s. Performances will include an original score created by Solange herself, and performed by Cooper-Moore.
The series also features screenings of the following films: Mother Tongue, Mother Master, 2018, Wild Seed, Diary of an African Nun and Four Women, Black to Techno, AFRONAUTS and Boneshaker, The State of Things, and additional films.
The event takes place this weekend on Saturday November 16th and Sunday November 17th. All events are free and open to the public.
