mxdwn PREMIERE: Eden Iris Soundtracks a Party for One in Somber New Video for “Birthday Baby”

Now based in Los Angeles, Eden Iris is a New Zealand born singer-songwriter with an ear for bittersweet melodies and a folksy atmosphere. Today we’re premiering the somber new video for her song “Birthday Baby,” a clip which stars a single woman alone at her own birthday party, waiting in vain for someone else to show up.

The melancholy song is about the end of a relationship, as director Bailey Heinonen describes. “It is a video about the melancholy that comes before you accept the end of your time with someone,” she said. The main character in the video is a woman named Rosie, who sits alone in her kitchen at a table bracketed by pink balloons, a large slice of pink cake at the table in front of her.

“I played Director Bailey Heinonen several of my songs and almost straight away she got back to me with an idea for a music video for ‘Birthday Baby,’ said Eden Iris. “The scene starts with a picturesque birthday party, which shows us the gradual let-down our character Rosie feels, waiting for someone who never shows up. To me, the birthday cake in the video is also symbolic of the fairytales we tell ourselves when we are in relationships, when we don’t want to face reality that something isn’t working.”

Eden Iris has released two EPs over the last two years. In September she released the four-song EP Dream Colored Life, a collaboration with fellow Kiwi Rick Watt. In 2018 she released Demons, a five-song offering. The “Birthday Baby” single comes with a B-side, a track called “Lullaby.”
