CocoRosie Announces New Album Put The Shine On for March 2020 Release

Musical duo CocoRosie have announced a new album entitled Put The Shine On, which is set to be released on March 6th 2020 via Marathon Artists. This album announcement is followed by a new music video for “Smash my Head,” which is directed by Bianca Casady.

“Smash My Head,” is a powerful, and somber track with dark lyrics, discussing inner turmoil, complimented by an eerie instrumental with strange vocal overlays, that become more experimental as the song continues. The music video takes place in an asylum and shows many different actors dancing and sitting, as scenes that are shot in black and white and color cut in between each other.

“For us, our song “Smash My Head” is a running-on-fire cry from the teenage heart, an inner scream we never dared to let out,” the duo stated in a press release. “The song climaxes in an exaltation, an expression of ecstatic death. It journeys from a hard-knock desert childhood scene to a transcendent cosmic passing to another realm.”

The duo dropped their first track in two years “Lamb and Wolf,” back in August which also saw the duo explore a more experimental territory with their music. This track, like the recent music video, also dealt with themes and issues of mental health.

“Sonically it’s a whole new flavor for us with a bass line that paints a 70’s funk, girl orphans doing karate in the jungle kind of scene,” the band explained in an interview with The Fader. “The lyrics explore mental illness and how we demonize the mentally ill in our society. It’s kind of satirical…it’s about paranoia and how society participates in destroying the fragile ones, the wise ones. ‘They’re trying to Britney Spears me’ is a favorite line.”
