16 long years have passed since Josh Homme’s last Desert Sessions compilation project has been released, but today that music-less streak is finally broken. Desert Sessions debuted their unique new music video for the song, “Crucifire,” which accompanies the groups Desert Sessions Volume’s 11 and 12, which are now available for purchase here. The musicians involved in the making of “Crucifire” include Josh Homme on guitar, Royal Blood’s Mike Kerr taking lead vocals, Scissor Sister’s Jake Shears with the backing bits, Chavez’s Matt Sweeny joining Homme on guitar, and Autolux’s Carla Azar on drums and synth loops.
This creative animated music video is almost as impressive as the band itself. The video was directed by Anthony Francisco Schepperd and depicts a defiant female breaking free of the monitored norm that surrounds her. This song’s vibe matched with its eye-catching visual can only make one think that if the Teen Titans became a band and their number one influence was the Beastie Boys, this is how it would sound. The catchy guitar riff wails over the head bobbing drum pattern which is all held together by Mike Kerr’s voice like glue. Desert Sessions is a very unique music ensemble, led by band creator, Josh Homme, the group is collaboration project consisting of different members for each volume. The idea was formed in 1997 when Homme brought together musicians from 5 different bands, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee Soundgarden, for a massive collaboration project. The first session wasn’t really a studio session at all, but more like a group of guys tripping on mushrooms and playing music for three days straight, and thus the Desert Sessions projects were born. Over time the music evolved into more intense and artistically impressive tracks, creating legendary status for anyone involved in the projects.
One of the most impressive things about Desert Sessions’ time in the studio is that they write all their songs on the spot. There is no rehearsal before the musicians get there, no pre-written or pre-recorded songs, just a group of incredibly talented musicians using their tools to make magic. The song “Creoste,” which is featured on Desert Sessions Volume 9 and 10, was writted by Dean Ween and Alain Johannes on the ranch’s front porch within four minutes of meeting each other. But even more impressive than that is when Chris Goss and PJ Harvey walked out on the same porch mentioned before with nothing but an acoustic guitar and wrote the song “There Will Never Be A Better Time” in under five minutes. The two then made their way into the studio and recorded the song in one take, making that recording the only time that song has ever been played by the group.
