Legendary comedian Dave Chapelle hosted a “Gem City Shine” benefit in Dayton, OH on Sunday in honor of the victims and survivors of the Aug. 4 mass shooting. The event took place in the Oregon Historic District of Downtown, where the shooting also occurred. In a CBS News Report, more than 20,000 people attended the benefit which included quite the roster of performers. According to Brooklyn Vegan, Stevie Wonder, Chance the Rapper, Talib Kweli, Teyana Taylor, and Thundercat all took part. “Don’t forget what this place is about! Mankind learned how to fly in this city,” Chappelle told to the crowd. “Don’t forget what this place is about. When the rest of the country was all slavery, everybody was free in Ohio.” Sunday was also Chapelle’s birthday, which fellow comedian Jon Stewart led a “Happy Birthday” sing-a-long for him. Chris Rock and Michael Che also joined.
Kanye West was not apart of the benefit but did hold one of his Sunday Services in honor of the late victims the morning of the benefit. Check out some clips of the performances and Sunday Service below.
