Bassist and vocalist Kim Gordon has just announced her debut solo album No Home Record, which is slated to be released on October 11th on Matador Records. While the performer has a long star studded career of over 40 years for fronting Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, Body/Head and Glitterburst, this is her first solo album.
Gordon has also released a new music video for the upcoming album’s first single entitled “Sketch Artist,” directed by Loretta Fahrenholz, and which features a cameo from actress Abbi Jacobson. The video shows Gordon driving through in a ride sharing “Unter” (likely a reference to the drive sharing app Uber) late at night across the streets of Los Angeles.
“‘Why a solo record? And why now?,’” Gordon mused of the upcoming solo debut in a press release. “I don’t know, but it wouldn’t have happened without the persistence of Justin Raisen. Living in LA the last few years it feels like home, but the transience of the place makes it feel sometimes like no home.”
While Sonic Youth saw its end in 2011 after a much-publicized split between Thurston Moore and Gordon, previously archived video and live performance recordings of the band are still being released to this day. Earlier this year they released Battery Park, NYC: July 4, 2008 for commercial release and live streaming, which showed the band at their best prior to their end three years later.
While Gordon has never released an entire studio album full of material, she has released singles in the past such as “Murdered Out,” in 2016. This music video is also a similarly dark track, which explores the underbelly of modern Los Angeles culture and the city’s aesthetic.
“When I moved back to LA I noticed more and more cars painted with black matte spray, tinted windows, blackened logos, and black wheels,” Gordon explained in 2016. “A statement-making rejection of the shiny brand new look, the idea of a new start, the promise of power, and the freedom on the open road”
