Behemoth Release Dark New Video for “Sabbath Mater”

Behemoth premiered a new music video for their song, “Sabbath Mater.” The song appeared on their most recent project, I Love You At Your Darkest, and just like the video, it’s full of sacrilegious symbolism. The name Sabbath Mater is a metal infused play on Stabat Mater, a 13th century Christian hymn to Mary which portrayed her suffering at the foot of the crucifixion. The music video depicts a devilish woman presumably taking the souls from the bodies of dismembered humans covered with blood. Resembling something along the lines of a touristic ritual, a man whose eyes are covered by a thorn bush of nails is hammering human body parts to a cross.

Behemoth’s hellish take on Stabat Mater (Sabbath Mater) was loud and present in the first few lines of the song, “The root of sin is derived from me” shows the correlation between the anti-religious allegory of the music video and the lyrics. The video was shot by Grupa 13, a Polish production company, who helped the bands nefarious visions for the music video come true. The song represents everything opposite of the 13th century Christian hymn, and the music video reflects that with upside down crosses, indiscernible imagery, and piles of dead bodies.

The band dropped this demonic music video just in time for their appearance alongside Volbeat, and Gojira at Slipknot’s inaugural Knotfest Roadshow. Behemoth has had trouble on the road before however, facing criminal charges for ripping a bible, having the band being detained and deported from Russia, even winning a court case in 2017 over displaying the Polish coat of arms on their t-shirts. But most recently Behemoth has found themselves in another controversial situation, an Irish councilor is calling for the band’s ban throughout Ireland over their Satanic beliefs and practices. Fortunately for them the Knotfest Roadshow won’t be making any European stops during the tour, so the band should in the clear when it comes to any touring troubles. But there is no doubt, Behemoth’s creepy creativity and satanic intelligence shines bright in their most recent music video for “Sabbath Mater,” leaving any viewer with an uneasy stomach and nightmares for weeks.
